How To Get Involved At Your Loved One's Senior Living Community

How To Create Connections & Build Relationships

When a loved one moves into a senior living community, it’s normal that you’ll both have some questions and concerns about all the changes you’re both facing. Will your loved enjoy living at their new community? Will it be easy for them to adapt and feel comfortable? How will family members fit into their new life? What are the best ways to stay connected?

Discover A Community Of Support

At The Crossings at Riverchase, family members of residents are an integral part of our welcoming community. Between residents and staff members, everyone looks forward to getting to know the families of other residents. Here are a few ways you can get involved:

  1. Help staff members get to know your loved one. As a family member, you can encourage your loved one to share about their experiences, family history, interests, likes and dislikes. The better staff members know each resident, the more they understand their unique personality and needs.
  2. Take time to visit with staff members and caregivers. Spending time with your loved one will be your main focus, but you’ll both enjoy learning about the new people around them. Learning staff members’ names and expressing a few words of thanks when you visit the community can go a long way.
  3. Become active at the community. Senior living communities are typically very open to family involvement – The Crossings certainly encourages it! If you’re able to take part in community events, you’ll meet even more of your loved one’s neighbors and caregivers. You may even want to keep up with community communications so you can suggest ways for your loved one to get involved themselves.
  4. Plan ahead for special occasions. You can also plan your own events for or with your loved one, perhaps reserving a private dining room or other gathering space for a special celebration. Arrange to bring in treats for their birthday or anniversary – which additionally serves as an opportunity for your loved one to interact with other residents and staff members.
  5. Connect through regular visits and communication. There’s no doubt that visiting your loved one helps them feel more familiar and comfortable in their new senior living community. It can be helpful to schedule your visits during “free time” when there are no other activities going on. While it can be more difficult for long-distance family members to feel involved, The Crossings is committed to making it as easy as possible for family members near or far to get involved as much as they wish.
